What Is a Pop Up Camper?
A pop up camper, also known as a tent camper or fold-down camper, is a lightweight, towable RV that folds flat for towing and storage, then expands into a full living space at your campsite. Available in box lengths of 8 to 16 feet with sleeping capacity for 2 to 8 people, they're one of the most affordable and accessible entry points into RV ownership. Pop up campers often offer the most beds per dollar of any RV type, easy to tow, simple to store in a garage or driveway, and compatible with a wide range of vehicles.
Types of Pop Up Campers
There are two main types of pop up campers, each with their own trade-offs:
- Soft-sided tent campers are the classic pop up design with canvas walls that fold out to create sleeping and living space. Lightweight, affordable, and great for mild-weather camping, though canvas requires periodic maintenance and provides less insulation than hard-sided options.
- Hard-sided pop up campers (A-frame) feature rigid walls that fold down flat and pop up into an A-frame shape. Hard-sided models offer better insulation, security, and weather protection than canvas alternatives. They also have a lower center of gravity than taller travel trailers, which reduces sway on the road and makes for a more stable tow.

Is a pop-up camper a good first RV?
Pop-up campers are one of the best beginner RVs on the market. Their compact footprint when folded makes them easier to store than a standard travel trailer, and you can often find a used model in good condition for less than $10,000.
What vehicle do I need to tow a pop up camper?
One of the biggest advantages of pop up campers is their towing flexibility. Many models are light enough to be towed by a mid-sized SUV, crossover, or even some larger sedans. We recommend checking your vehicle's tow rating and using our RV Tow Guide to confirm compatibility before you buy.
How long does it take to set up a pop up camper?
Setup typically takes anywhere from 10 to 30 minutes depending on your familiarity with the process. We recommend practicing at home before your first campsite visit. It makes arrival a lot smoother.
What is the difference between a pop up camper and a travel trailer?
The key difference is size, weight, and storage footprint. Pop up campers fold flat for towing and storage, making them more compact and easier to tow than a traditional travel trailer. Travel trailers offer more living space and year-round insulation, but require a capable tow vehicle and more storage space. If you're not ready to commit to a full travel trailer, a pop up is a smart, lower-cost starting point.
Are pop up campers good in bad weather?
Soft-sided tent campers offer basic weather protection but have limited insulation, making them best suited for three-season camping. Hard-sided A-frame models handle temperature regulation significantly better and provide more protection from wind, rain, and wildlife. If you camp in variable or colder conditions, a hard-sided pop up is worth the upgrade.
