How old is too old for a used travel trailer?
Age alone is not the most important factor. A well-maintained older trailer will often outperform a newer unit that sat unused for years. What matters most is maintenance history, overall condition, and whether the unit has known issues. Ask for service records, check for signs of water damage, and consider a professional inspection before committing.
What should you look for when buying a used travel trailer?
Work through a thorough walkaround before you buy. Key things to check include:
- Structural integrity: soft spots on the floor, wall streaks, mold, bowed ceilings, and corroded components are red flags for water damage
- Roof and seals: inspect for cracks, failing caulk, and soft spots around penetrations like vents and air conditioning units
- Slide-outs: test operation and check seals for wear
- Appliances and systems: run everything, including the furnace, water heater, air conditioning, and all electrical outlets
